Respiratory Care Course Descriptions

RESP 111 Respiratory Care Modalities (3)

A detailed study of all commonly used respiratory care treatments. Included are medical gas therapy, humidity and aerosol therapy, IPPB, incentive spirometry, and chest physiotherapy. The goals, indications, contraindications, and hazards for each modality are covered. An introduction to cardiopulmonary anatomy is included. (Fall Semester)

RESP 112 Gas Exchange Physiology (3)

Prerequisite: RESP 111 and RESP 196. Structure and function of the lung as related to gas exchange, ventilation, diffusion, perfusion, and ventilation-perfusion relationships. Oxygen and carbon dioxide transport are emphasized along with abnormalities in the gas exchange mechanism. This will lead to and be integrated with clinical applications and interpretation of arterial blood gas analysis. (Spring Semester)

RESP 165 Respiratory Pharmacology (2)

The various classifications of drugs, drug action and effects, site of activity, recommended dosages, and toxicity. Special emphasis is given to anesthetics, bronchodilators, current aerosolized drugs, anti-viral agents, aerosolized antibiotics, mucolytics, and wetting agents since these apply to respiratory care. (Fall Semester)

RESP 196 Equipment Laboratory Practicum (1)

An introduction to the applied science of respiratory care. Practical experience in the use of IPPB, humidity/aerosol generators, oxygen-administering devices, regulators and flowmeters, oxygen analyzers, bulk oxygen systems, manual resuscitators, and fire control methods. BCLS certification is included as well as an introduction to the roles and functions of the health care team. (Fall Semester)

RESP 200 Pediatric Respiratory Care (2)

Prerequisite: RESP 111 and RESP 291. Emphasis is on neonatal and pediatric anatomy, physiology, and disease states as compared to the adult. An introduction to neonatal and pediatric mechanical ventilation is included. (Fall Semester)

RESP 215 Mechanical Ventilation (4)

Prerequisites: MATH 120 or equivalent, RESP 112 and RESP 290. An in-depth study of mechanical ventilation and ventilators. Ventilator classification and characteristics are surveyed. Continuation of mechanical ventilatory support, management, and related critical care monitoring. Three class sessions and one laboratory and problem session per week. (Summer Session)

RESP 250 Cardiopulmonary and Renal Physiology (3)

Prerequisites: RESP 215, RESP 291 and BIOL 215. A detailed study of cardiac, pulmonary, and renal physiology with emphasis on the interaction of circulation and ventilation, mechanics of ventilation, renal and cardiac hemodynamics, and cardiac electrophysiology. Blood buffer systems, blood gas analysis, and maintenance and alteration of whole body homeostasis as a result of renal function. (Fall Semester)

RESP 260 Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Home Care (2)

Prerequisites: RESP 165, RESP 200, RESP 250 and RESP 296. A study of the special problems of the pulmonary impaired. Students learn how to assess and categorize and then apply education, graded exercises, and bronchial hygiene in the rehabilitative process. Outpatient and home care are stressed as an alternative to and prevention of hospitalization. (Spring Semester)

RESP 290 Basic Respiratory Care Practicum (2)

Prerequisites: RESP 111 and RESP 196. An introduction to the hospital setting and patient care. Students become familiar with patients' charts, documentation, working with respiratory equipment, and applying it to patient care. They learn to perform basic respiratory care procedures such as oxygen, IPPB, aerosol, chest physiotherapy, and incentive therapies. (Spring Semester)

RESP 291 Intermediate Respiratory Care Practicum (2)

Prerequisites: RESP 112 and RESP 290. Designed to make students proficient in administering basic respiratory care procedures. They will become totally responsible in handling every aspect of general floor care and will be introduced to the intensive care environment and techniques of blood gas sampling and analysis. Theory and practical use of ventilators are introduced in this practicum. (Summer Session)

RESP 294 Topics in Respiratory Care (1-4)

Designed for students who wish a course not listed in the regular offerings. A current topic in respiratory care will be explored. (Offered as needed)

RESP 295 Independent Study in Respiratory Care (1-3)

Study on an independent basis in collaboration with the instructor on an area of respiratory care.

RESP 296 Critical Care Practicum (2)

Prerequisites: RESP 215 and RESP 291. The use of mechanical ventilators and the management of patients requiring such support. Students practice to obtain proficiency in the area of airway suctioning. Airway management is included. (Fall Semester)

RESP 305 Human Diseases (3)

Prerequisites: RESP 165, RESP 200, RESP 250 and RESP 296. Effects of various diseases upon the cardiopulmonary system. Acute and long term aspects of ventilatory-circulatory impairment to include asthma, emphysema, and work-related insults to the respiratory system. (Spring Semester)

RESP 325 Pulmonary Functions (2)

Prerequisites: RESP 250 and RESP 296. Detailed analysis of all major parameters of ventilatory measurements as well as diagnostic significance of deviations from predicted normal values. Laboratory work is included. (Spring Semester)

RESP 333 Health Care Delivery Systems (3)

An overview of the organization, delivery, financing and evaluation of the U.S. health care system. Emphasis is on major system components and their inter-relationships. Cross-listed as HCAD 333. (Available only through the External Degree Program)

RESP 335 Management Practices and Educational Methods for Allied Health (2)

Prerequisite: RESP 290, RESP 305, RESP 395 or permission of instructor. Basic management and educational methods as applied to the clinical setting. Management areas include industrial relations, communications, planning, budget preparation, and personnel administration. Educational methods include curriculum design, writing course objectives, and teaching strategies with emphasis on clinical instruction. (Fall Semester)

RESP 344 Research Methods in Health Care (3)

Prerequisite: Math 110. An introduction to the materials and methods of research in health care through a study of research design and an investigation of source materials, bibliography, as well as concepts and techniques of research. RESP 355 Advanced Patient Assessment (3)

The systematic study of heatlh assessment techniques important to high quality patient care. The use of evidence based protocols derived from clinical practice guidelines is emphasized. (Available only through the External Degree Program)

RESP 360 Seminar in Human Disease (2)

Prerequisites: RESP 355 or permission of instructor. The study of numerous patient case studies along with the newest methods of disease and ventilator management. A literature search and paper presentation are required. (Available only through the External Degree Program)

RESP 365 Hemodynamic Monitoring (4)

Prerequisite: RESP 355. The equipment and techniques of both invasive and noninvasive advanced patient monitoring. (Available only through the External Degree Program)

RESP 366 Human Resources Management (3)

A study of human resource management in health care. Course topics include personnel planning, staffing, development, training, and evaluation. Cross-listed as HCAD 366. (Available only through the External Degree Program)

RESP 395 Pediatrics/Advanced Critical Care Practicum (2)

Prerequisites: RESP 200, RESP 250 and RESP 296. Clinical exposure to the pediatric environment. The clinical will include a learning experience in the neonatal and pediatric intensive care unit. Additional opportunity is provided for rotation in a selected area of respiratory care. Students rotate through a trauma intensive care unit. (Spring Semester)

RESP 420 Current Concepts (3)

The study of the newest developments and advances in the field of respiratory care. (Available only through the External Degree Program)

RESP 422 Regulations and Legal Issues in Health Care (3)

A study of regulations and legal principles and processes influencing health care providers. Topics include public health laws, institutional and professional liability, informed consent, confidentiality, legislative activities, and medico-legal issues in health care. Cross-listed as HCAD 422. (Available only through the External Degree Program)

RESP 425 Physical Fitness Assessment (3)

Prerequisite: BIOL 112, CHEM 105, and CHEM 110. The study of the physiology of exercise and how various exercise programs can be used to increase quality of life, decrease risks for cardiovascular disease, and reduce hypertension and fatigue. Careful study is given to exercise and stress testing and how it is used as a diagnostic tool for the detection of abnormal physiological and anatomical functions. Various testing tools such as treadmills, spirometers, skinfold calibers, blood tests, posture grids, and tensiometers are used to evaluate the physical fitness of the individual. RESP 435 Advanced Human Physiology (3)

Prerequisite: BIOL 112 or BIOL 162 and CHEM 110 or equivalent. An advanced study of the physiological mechanisms in the body. Special emphasis is placed on the cardiopulmonary muscular and endocrine systems and on physiology at the molecular level. RESP 444 Planning and Quality in Health Care (3)

The application of planning and quality theories in health care settings. The course includes the conceptual framework and tools for planning, measuring, evaluating, and improving quality in health care systems. Cross-listed as HCAD 444. (Available only through the External Degree Program)

RESP 466 Advanced Disease Management (3)

Clinical decision making, case management, and patient education across a variety of health care settings in perinatal through geriatric populations. (Available only through the External Degree Program)

RESP 495 Independent Study in Respiratory Care (1-3)
