Music Performance Course Descriptions

MUPF 120 Band (Columbia Concert Winds) (1)

This course is designed to acquaint the students with standard band literature. Performances are given regularly in conjunction with college activities or as special programs. Open to all students by audition. May be repeated for maximum of three hours credit. (Fall and Spring Semesters)

MUPF 227 Orchestra (New England Youth Ensemble) (1)

This chamber orchestra is open to all by audition. It studies standard chamber orchestral material as well as choral/orchestral material and maintains a heavy performance schedule. (Fall and Spring Semesters)

MUPF 228 Ensemble (1)

Practical experience in the performance of selected ensemble works. May be repeated for maximum of three hours credit. (Fall and Spring Semesters)

MUPF 230 BrassWorks (1)

Prerequisite: By audition. Music of Gabrielli, Purcell, Bach, and other sixteenth century composers, along with some contemporary literature, is performed by the brass choir. Two rehearsals a week and performances as scheduled. (Fall and Spring Semesters)

MUPF 235 Columbia Collegiate Chorale (1)

A large choral organization performing both standard a cappella and accompanied repertoire. Audition may be required. It maintains a heavy performance schedule. (Fall and Spring Semesters)

MUPF 245 Performance Workshop (1)

Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor. Musical and dramatic preparation of scenes from opera, operetta, musical theater, or oratorio literature for public performance. Rehearsal attendance strictly required. Enrollment in private voice lessons highly recommended. Audition may be required for certain roles. (Fall and Spring Semesters)

MUPF 250 Pro Musica (1)

Prerequisite: By audition. The twenty members of this highly select mixed choir perform sacred and secular concerts, and all members receive scholarships. (Fall and Spring Semesters)

MUPF 327 Accompaniment (1)

Prerequisite: Approval of the department chairman. Training in instrumental and vocal accompanying and in the performance of selected ensemble works. Practical experience accompanying in studios is offered. May be repeated up to three hours. (Offered on an independent study basis as needed)

MUPF 359 Conducting I (2)

The study and drill of basic conducting techniques. Coordination of hand techniques, breath control, sound control, articulation, dynamics, and baton techniques. When possible, practical application in active musical organizations. (Offered as needed)

MUPF 360 Conducting II (2)

Prerequisite: MUPF 359. Conducting patterns applied to elements of interpretation. Emphasis on score reading, rehearsal techniques, and conducting problems. Emphasis may be on either choral or instrumental mediums. Practical application in active musical organizations. (Spring Semester)
