LITR 225 American Literature I (3)

Prerequisite: ENGL 102. A survey of American literature from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. Covers the contribution of major American authors, including Native American, African-American, and women authors. (Fall Semester)

LITR 226 American Literature II (3)

Prerequisite: ENGL 102. A survey of American literature in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including contributions of major American, Native American, African-American, and Hispanic authors. (Spring Semester)

LITR 227 African-American Literature (3)

Prerequisite: ENGL 102. An examination of the cultural expression of African-Americans from the eighteenth century to contemporary readings. In addition to the study of selected writers, this course will focus on textual analysis, cultural criticism, social and political commentary, and the current debate over the construction of the traditional literary canon. (As Requested)

LITR 228 Literature of Washington, DC (3)

This course introduces students to a variety of works of American literature based in or by authors from the nation's capitol. Through close reading, students explore the form and content of selected texts, emphasizing their historical and social contexts. (Spring Semester)

LITR 230 British Literature (3)

Prerequisite: ENGL 102. Provides students with a comprehensive exposure to the canonical works of the British literary tradition. Introduces the student to the major literary genres and the historical periods which produced them. (Fall Semester)

LITR 235 World Literature and Fine Arts I (3)

Prerequisite: ENGL 102. A survey of the major works of Western and Eastern literature, art, and music from the ancients to the sixteenth century. A laboratory is required that includes required attendance at a drama and music performance as well as a visit to an art museum or architectural site. (Fall Semester)

Prerequisite: ENGL 102. A survey of the major works of Western and Eastern literature, art, and music from the seventeenth century to the present. A laboratory is required that includes required attendance at a drama and music performance as well as a visit to an art museum or architectural site. (Spring Semester)

LITR 294 Topics in Literature (1-4)

Courses designed by the department of English which study particular authors, genres, and/or literary movements not covered in the department curriculum. (Offered as needed)

LITR 295 Independent Study in Literature (1-3)

Study on an independent basis in collaboration with the instructor on a topic in literature at the lower division level. (Offered as needed)

LITR 335 Great Books (3)

Prerequisite: LITR 200 level course. A study of books that have changed the way people think; books that are generally considered to be in the top ranks of seminal literature; books selected from non-Western as well as Western literature. (Spring Semester)

LITR 340 Medieval and Renaissance Literature (3)

Prerequisite:LITR 200 level course. A study of selections from religious and secular literature of the English Medieval and Renaissance periods, including emphasis on the works of Chaucer, Spenser, and Shakespeare. (Spring Semester odd years)

LITR 370 Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Literature (3)

Prerequisite:LITR 200 level course. A study of the poets and prose writers of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, including emphasis on the works of Donne, Jonson, Milton, and the major writers of satire during the Restoration and eighteenth century. (Spring Semester even years)

LITR 450 Nineteenth Century British and American Literature (3)

Prerequisite:LITR 200 level course. A study of nineteenth century British and American writers beginning with Romanticism and moving to turn-of-the-century texts, including the lyric poem, the slave narrative, and the novel of manners. Traces the development of key literary movements and forms of the century with emphasis given to significant historical influences. (Fall Semester odd years)

LITR 460 Twentieth Century British and American Literature (3)

Prerequisite:LITR 200 level course. A study of British and American writers from the aesthetes and decadents of the late nineteenth century to contemporary writers. In addition to the reading of selected poetry and novels, the course includes study of key literary and historical movements as well as a critique of the categories of modernism and postmodernism. (Fall Semester even years)

Prerequisite:LITR 200 level course. Courses designed by the department of English which study particular authors, genres, and/or literary movements not covered in the departmental curriculum. (Offered as needed)

LITR 495 Independent Study in Literature (1-3)
