BRMD 101 Audio and Video Basics (4)
Students will study and apply the fundamentals of pre-production, production
and post-production. Principles of scriptwriting, videography, lighting, editing,
microphone techniques, audio mixing and broadcast performance will consist of
the course topics. Credit for this course does not apply toward a major or minor
in Broadcast Journalism, but it does apply toward the general education practical
and applied arts requirements..
BRMD 225 Elements of Audio Production (3)
Prerequisite: COMM 175. Production and direction of various types of
radio programs and sound productions; training in the evaluation and interpretation
of scripts; selection and use of music and sound effects: timing, rehearsals,
control room techniques, and the coordination of personnel involved in audio
productions. (Spring Semester)
BRMD 260 Video-Tape Editing (3)
Prerequisite: BRMD 230. Analysis and training in video-tape editing
including preparation for post-production, on-line and off-line editing modes,
time codes and video tape formats, assemble and insert editing, and multiple
source editing, with emphasis on continuity editing. (Fall Semester)
BRMD 300 Electronic Field Production (3)
Prerequisite: BRMD 260, BRMD 375. Sound and visuals with portable lights,
audio equipment, cameras, and video tape recorders. Video recording, documentaries,
feature stories, and news reports requiring post production editing. (Fall Semester)
BRMD 345 Multicamera Production and Direction (3)
Prerequisite: BRMD 260, JOUR 280, JOUR 300. Fundamentals of the principles
and techniques of producing and directing multicamera live news and public affairs
productions. Lab exercises will emphasize skill-related topics such as script
marking, segment timing and crew position. Assessment is based on flawless production,
direction and execution of newscast style, demonstration style, interview style
and variety show formats.
BRMD 360 Broadcast Program Criticism (3)
Prerequisite: ENGL 102. An investigation of the professional, historical,
social, and psychological criticisms of American radio and television, together
with a critical analysis of contemporary programming trends and conventions.

BRMD 375 Radio and Television Script Writing (3)
Prerequisite: COMM 175. See JOUR 375 for course description. (Fall
Semester)
BRMD 440 Noncommercial & Public Broadcasting (3)
An examination of the historical development of noncommercial, public, religious
and educational broadcasting in America and evaluations of various types of
contemporary noncommercial, religious and educational programs. Emphasis is
on developing alternative methods of programmimg, advertising, public relations,
and community programs for noncommercial, educational and public broadcasting.

BRMD 455 The Documentary and Public Affairs I (3)
Prerequisites: ENGL 102, BRMD 230, 375. Analysis and evaluation of
the forms, techniques, approaches, and relative effectiveness of various selected
types of documentaries. Emphasis will be on the step-by-step procedures of designing,
planning, and script treatment of a short-length documentary. (Fall Semester
even Years)
BRMD 456 The Documentary and Public Affairs II (3)
Prerequisites: BRMD 260, 300, 455. The principles of documentary-making
applied to the complete production, post-production and presentation of a short-length
documentary. (Spring Semester odd years)
BRMD 460 Non-linear Editing (3)
Prerequisites: BRMD 260 and GART 140 or permission of the instructor.
An introduction to advanced digital editing systems with an emphasis in applying
desktop video techniques in preparation for on-line post-production editing.

BRMD 496 Practicum in Broadcast Media (1-4)
Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor. Students who participate
in co-curricular activities or projects in any area of communication may receive
one hour of credit per semester. Course may be repeated. Majors may apply a
maximum of four hours practicum credit toward meeting major requirements. Three
hours may be earned in a one-term internship in AV editing, publishing, broadcasting,
and public relations activities. (Fall and Spring Semesters and Summer Session)
